Joslyn Art Museum Organized Art Trips
Joslyn Art Museum offers annual art trips ranging from one- or two-day excursions to U.S. cities, viewing special exhibitions and museum collections, to two-week international trips. Some trips are open only to Joslyn's Patron members or members of the Museum's collectors' groups, while others are open to the general public.
Destination Detroit: Let Yourself Go!
Motown. Motor City. The D. Whatever you choose to call it, participants in Joslyn Art Museum's fall art excursion will enjoy two art-filled days in Detroit, Michigan, Wednesday, October 15, and Thursday, October 16.
From putting the world on wheels to the Motown sound, Detroit has crafted American culture. The city is home to the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), the fifth-largest fine arts Museum in the U.S., founded in 1885. Its 100 galleries showcase selections from a collection of more than 60,000 works from prehistory through the 21st century. Tour-goers will enjoy a day at DIA. At the museum, the group will be greeted by Graham W. J. Beal, director of the DIA and former Joslyn director. This personal welcome to the Museum will be followed by time to explore the extensive permanent collection, highlighted by Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry fresco cycle, considered the finest example of Mexican muralist work in the U.S., and Vincent van Gogh's 1887 Self-Portrait, the first van Gogh painting to enter a U.S. museum collection. Also see the special exhibition Monet to Dalí: Modern Masters from the Cleveland Museum of Art. From the dynamic brushstrokes of Van Gogh to the hazy delicacy of Monet, from Picasso's inventiveness to Dalí's demented dreamscapes, these are works you'll never forget!
Also on the itinerary is a visit to the National Historic Landmark Pewabic Pottery, one of only three historic Arts & Crafts era potteries still in existence today, renowned for its handmade tile and vases in unique glazes. Travelers will also take in the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Cranbrook is a contemporary art museum located at the heart of Cranbrook Educational Community, one of the nation's greatest architectural complexes, featuring the work of architects Steven Holl, Albert Kahn, Rafael Moneo, Peter Rose, Eliel Saarinen, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, and sculptors Carl Milles, Marshall Fredericks, and others.
Wednesday evening accommodations are at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Dearborn, Michigan. Travelers will also find time available for shopping or just relaxing and enjoying the views of the Detroit River and Windsor, Ontario (Detroit is the only major U.S. city that looks south to Canada).
This two-day trip is $788 per person and includes round trip air fare (Southwest Airlines leaving Omaha 7:10 am, arriving Detroit, 11:50 am; return flight leaving Detroit 4:40 pm, arriving Omaha 8:10 pm), ground transportation, travel escort, museum and tour fees, and gratuities. Deadline for registration is Friday, August 15, at which time notification will be mailed to the first 25 registered. Remaining registrations will be placed on Joslyn's waiting list. In case of participant cancellation following the booking, a refund of the full amount, less a $100 name change fee will be granted until August 29 if a replacement from Joslyn's waiting list is found.
