School Tours

Joslyn Art Museum offers teachers and students inspiration and information to enhance their curriculum with the arts.

Guided School Groups

Docent-guided, grade-appropriate tours are available in the permanent collection and special exhibitions. Visit times and dates must be scheduled a minimum of four weeks in advance and confirmed by the Coordinator of Outreach, Tours and Visitor Resources.

Self-Guided School Groups

Teachers may schedule time in the Museum galleries to conduct their own tour with students. Visit times and dates must be scheduled a minimum of two weeks in advance and confirmed by the Coordinator of Outreach, Tours and Visitor Resources. All Joslyn guided tour groups have preference over self-guided groups in the galleries.

How to Schedule A Museum Visit

Please have the following information available when you call or e-mail:

• School name, address, school district, and contact information
• Several potential visit dates
• Special requests such as art-making, special needs for students, and sack lunch reservations
• Requested tour topic (Please see the "Tour Topics" pdf for a complete list of school tours.)

General Information

• Joslyn's building and grounds are handicapped accessible.
• Free bus parking is available along Dodge Street.

Hours

• Joslyn is open during the school week Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm.
• Guided tours generally begin on the hour.
• Tours with a related art-making activities are available Tuesday-Thursday, 10am-noon.

Student Group Admission Fees

• Group visits are defined as a group of 10 or more visiting Joslyn.
• Students, grade K-12: $4 per student
• Art-making activities are an additional $1 per student.
• Admission can be paid on one of two ways. Upon arrival in one payment for the entire group, or ask for your school to be billed.

Transportation/Admission Underwriting

• Transportation underwriting is available on a first come/first serve basis thanks to the generous support of the Dr. C.C. and Mabel Criss Memorial Foundation; the Gilbert C. Swanson Foundation, Inc.; First Data Western Union Foundation; H. Lee and Carol Gendler Charitable Fund; and US Bank.
• All student groups from the Omaha Public Schools have free admission with advanced scheduling.
• All 4th grade classes (regardless of district) who participate in the Western and Native American art receive free admission and transportation thanks in part to the generous support of the Edward and Lida Robinson Trust.

Chaperones

• No student may tour Joslyn unattended.
• Student behavior in the Museum is the responsibility of the chaperones from your school.
• Please make sure all chaperones understand the Museum Manners and Chaperones Responsibilities (included with tour confirmation packet).
• To accommodate chaperones, a certain number per visiting school group will be admitted free of charge.
• Guided tours: one adult per 10 students admitted free
• Self-guided tours: one adult per seven students admitted free
• Extra adults attending must pay the regular admissions.

Joslyn's Top Five Planning Tips

1. Visit www.joslyn.org for pre-visit plans, activities, and information on scheduling tours or outreach trunks.
2. Attend EdFest, Joslyn's annual open house for educators OR Joslyn's monthly teacher training sessions (beginning soon!).
3. Reserve an outreach trunk, schedule an art-making activity, or borrow free resource packs and videos from our Scott EdTech Gallery to complement your visit.
4. Become a member of Joslyn! Our special Educator rates of $40 for individuals and $50 for families includes free Museum admission, invitations to special events, a subscription to Joslyn's members' magazine, and discounts!
5. Relax and enjoy your visit!

Post-Visit Suggestions

• Pass out to each student the "Fun for Families" flyer and remind them to tell their families about our FREE Saturday mornings!
• Have students record their experiences at the Museum in a journal using language and/or images. Talk about any questions that students may have.
• Send examples of students' reactions to their Museum visit, such as drawings or letters, to the Education Department. Reactions and thank-you's let our donors know how important a visit to Joslyn is!
• Complete the online feedback survey, sent to each teacher contact via e-mail after your Joslyn visit.
• Talk to other educators about the visit, and think about how the Museum can be used as a resource to enhance classroom learning.
