Art-tastic Saturdays
Fashion in Art
First Saturdays of the month are for art fun! Stop by for gallery activities, special presentations, and creative exploration designed for all ages. The Joslyn’s collection offers an opportunity to explore fashion across time and cultures, with a variety of activities. Our VIP Visitors* this month will be the Learning Community Center of South Omaha.
A look at the fun this month from 11 am–2 pm:
- Begin at our Welcome Table in the Hawks Pavilion! Pick up a program and map for the day. We can let you know about membership opportunities, upcoming programs, our Bloomberg Connects digital guide, and Art Card self-guide resources. We also can help with any accessibility needs.
- Out & About Storytime with Omaha Public Library, 11 am. There will be opportunities to learn about all the great things happening at area libraries.
- Enjoy performances by local artists—Gauri Ratheesh Nair, an Indian classical dancer, at 12 pm, and the Raíces de México group performing folkloric dances at 1 pm—with short talks about the traditional clothing worn during these performances.
- Take a look at the mannequins in Cafe Atrium, with more clothing shared by today’s performers, Gauri Ratheesh Nair and Raíces de México.
- In the studio, create your own work of art with teaching artist CaSandra Johnson, using mixed media.
- Check out our Art Cart station, with opportunities to touch hands-on materials and talk about art with our friendly Gallery Volunteers.
- Drop-In Sketching! We have all the materials you need for sketching—a great way to slow down and look carefully at what you see.
- Join a public tour, led by our Gallery Volunteers, at 1 pm, The Joslyn’s Highlights. Free, drop-in experience.
- The Founder’s Room is designated as a quiet space for this event, stocked with an array of books and games.
- Don’t forget to check out more great spaces—The Cafe offers food and drink for sale. The Shop has beautiful art items for all ages and interests. Be sure to visit Art Works: A Place for Curiosity, an interactive space with nine different art activity stations (children must be accompanied by adults).
*VIP Visitors is a special invitation program for community groups to join in the fun at our monthly events, Art-tastic Saturdays and Nights at The Joslyn.
About the Performances
Gauri Ratheesh Nair, 12 pm performance: Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest and most revered classical dance forms of India, with its roots in the temples of Tamil Nadu. Known for its graceful movements, intricate footwork, and expressive storytelling, it brings to life tales from ancient epics and scriptures. Dancers wear vibrant silk costumes and traditional temple jewelry, with ornaments adorning the head, ears, neck, waist, and ankles, where bells (ghungroo) accentuate rhythmic patterns.
Raíces de México, 1 pm performance: Members of Grupo de Danza Raíces de México, a non profit organization in South Omaha, will present traditional folkloric dances from the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Raíces de México shares Mexican culture through folkloric dance. They perform across Nebraska and Iowa, offering students a professional, culturally enriching experience.
Generous support provided by Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program.
Sponsorship for this program series provided by FNBO and Omaha Steaks.
