November book: All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, a Black Family Keepsake by Tiya Miles (published 2021).

This award-winning, bestseller non-fiction book by acclaimed historian Tiya Miles is centered around a cotton sack that an enslaved woman named Rose gave her nine-year-old daughter Ashley when she was separated from her mother and sold in 1850s South Carolina. As described on the author’s website, “All That She Carried is a poignant story of resilience and of love passed down through generations of women against steep odds. It honors the creativity and fierce resourcefulness of people who preserved family ties even when official systems refused to do so, and it serves as a visionary illustration of how to reconstruct and recount their stories today.” 2021 National Book Award Winner.

Looking ahead to February: Sea of Grass: A Family Tale from the American Heartland by Walter R. Echo-Hawk; Feb 18 and Feb 21
