Teacher Nights
Teachers from all disciplines, who work in Nebraska and western Iowa PK-12 school districts, are welcome to participate in this free program. Join in to connect with other teaching professionals—and yourself—over artful experiences at The Joslyn.
NOVEMBER PROGRAM
Most people don’t look that hard at art, and if they do look, they don’t take the time or they think it’s something that’s beyond them, that it’s elitist, that it’s something only certain people can understand, that you’ve got to be a rocket scientist to get it. In fact, there’s no mystery at all. You’ve just got to look at it.
—Phillip G. Schrager
Inspired by this quote, the November program’s theme is LOOK. The evening starts with a social to catch-up with colleagues. Welcome and introductions begin at 5:15 pm followed by The Joslyn’s curator of contemporary art, Karin Campbell’s presentation about the Phillip G. Schrager Collection. Workshops follow the brief talk; select one below to register for the program.
ONLINE REGISTRATION IS CLOSED; contact us to see if there’s a space.
GROUPS A & B – LOOK
Join Gallery Teachers Alex Van Cleave and Baylee Bennett to explore works in the Schrager Collection on this abbreviated LOOK tour (gallery stools provided). We reimagined our guided tour offerings, and you will learn more about how we engage with your students to build their visual literacy skills in this demonstration of our new LOOK tour. Participants will also discover how we shifted our art-making activities (that pair with guided tours) to a choice-based, studio experience. The Joslyn’s Studio Programs team, Shelby Audiss and Emily Mitchell, will demonstrate how this works and talk about the theory as you make your own work of art.
GROUP C – RELEASE
Participants will enjoy building layers of paint on their canvas as their long hours at school are released. Teaching artist Jada Messick will share tips and techniques she uses in her practice to create abstract scenes in which you can get lost. The more you look at them, the more her nuances and details come alive. Use this time to experiment with different mediums as you blend, scrape, and create texture.
FREE program; online registration closes November 20; walk-in registrations accepted as space allows.
