Three people view Native American pottery displayed in a museum case. Two have long hair and wear casual clothes. A woman in black attire explains the artwork. Colorful patterned tapestries are on the walls in the background.

The Joslyn supports homeschool families and microschools with opportunities to discover art together through guided tours and self-guided visits, artful experiences, and curriculum enrichment.

Homeschool Days

Each semester during the school year, The Joslyn offers homeschools and microschools the opportunity to explore art as a family in this free drop-in program from 10 am to noon. Families will rotate through stations in the Museum to engage in gallery experiences, create art, and learn something new with a community partner.

Storytelling takes many forms at The Joslyn, and artworks hold stories waiting to be told. This school year, we will discover, create, and share them in our programs.

OCTOBER PROGRAM

Discover animals in art! From curious conversations about creatures in the galleries to making your own clay critters in the studio, families will share stories, spark imagination, and connect with art (and each other) in playful ways. Registration required; walk-ins accepted as space allows.

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS OPEN – Register now

STATIONS OPEN 10 AM–NOON:

Gallery Experience: Animal Encounters – From paws to claws, feathers to fins—animals are in art! Join Gallery Teachers for curious conversations that uncover how artists bring creatures to life and what it reveals about human relationships with them. Together, we will explore helping, farm, wild, and zoo animals—and, of course, our favorite pets—sharing our own animal stories along the way.

Art Making: Clay Critters – In this drop-in interactive workshop with teaching artist Harrison Cook, families will create animals inspired by ones found in The Joslyn’s collection. Continue your animal conversations at home when you decorate your critters once the clay dries. Get ready to get a little messy as you pinch, coil, and build your own creatures!

Community Partner – To be announced.

ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE ALL DAY:

Art Works: A Place for CuriosityProduce an animal-themed stop-motion video at the animation station or make a landscape artwork for your favorite animals at the creativity table.

Animal Hide & Seek – Explore the Museum and keep track of how many different animals you see on your adventure. We recommend using the Art Chats to have an artful conversation.

Animals in Art – Featuring art spanning centuries and continents, this exhibition explores some of the ways that animals of all kinds—wild, domesticated, and mythical—have inspired human creativity. We recommend using the Art Card “Imaginative Play.”

FREE program; online registration closes Tue, Oct 28; walk-in registrations accepted as space allows. Do you have an inquiry? Contact us.
