European Collection
Joslyn Art Museum features splendid holdings of European art, ranging from Old Master paintings to contemporary works. Fine examples of Titian and Veronese, as well as distinguished works by Claude Lorrain and El Greco, are among the highlights of the Museum's 16th- and 17th-century European collection. Joslyn is noted particularly for the strength of its 19th-century European collection, which includes exceptional examples of French art. Romanticism is epitomized in the work of Eugene Delacroix, Edouard Cibot and Karl Bodmer, while Realism is illustrated in the landscape paintings of Gustave Courbet and Gustave Doré.
The Museum's Impressionist collection features such renowned artists as Degas, Monet, Pissarro, and Renoir and is complemented by a strong group of 19th-century Academic paintings, including works by Bouguereau, Gérôme, and Meissonier. The paintings are complimented by a strong representation of 19th-century French sculpture, with works by Pierre Jean David d'Angers, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Auguste Rodin, and one of two plaster versions of Edgar Degas' Little Dancer.
