Teacher Nights

Thu Jan 29, 4:30PM–7:30PM

 JANUARY PROGRAM

Storytelling takes many forms at The Joslyn, and artworks hold stories waiting to be told. This school year, we will discover, create, and share them in our programs. For Teacher Nights this month, we will explore Dripping Earth: Cannupa Hanska Luger and consider the importance of community.

Each registrant will participate in a 30-minute gallery experience and then a 90-minute workshop. Select a group below to register for the program.

GROUP A– CONTAINERS OF THE PLAINS

Discover seven types of traditional rawhide containers and how materials, size, color, and symbolism communicate their purpose. Through storytelling, culture bearer Steve Tamayo (Sicangu Lakota) will share how to look for clues in the containers to understand family and regional tribal identity. Participants will create their own container with rawhide and explore ways to adapt this process for their classroom.

GROUP B – HANDS THAT HOLD

Explore how hands and vessels can express care, community, and connection in this hands-on clay workshop that is inspired by Cannupa Hanska Luger’s Irabágu installation. With Teaching Artist Sarah Carter, participants will create their own “clay vessel of care” while walking through the corresponding lesson plan. Teachers may take their vessels with them or leave them to be fired in the Museum’s kiln.

GROUP C – COMMUNITY CROCHET

Learn the basics of crochet with Teaching Artist Megan McCoy and then create colorful granny squares while immersed in Dripping Earth’s galleries. Individual squares will be joined into a collaborative fiber artwork—showing how many hands, small gestures, and shared care can come together to build something meaningful as a community.

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS CLOSED.
