Teacher Nights
Teachers from all disciplines, who work in Nebraska and western Iowa PK-12 school districts, are welcome to participate in this free program. Join in to connect with other teaching professionals—and yourself—over artful experiences at The Joslyn.
MARCH PROGRAM
Storytelling takes many forms at The Joslyn, and artworks hold stories waiting to be told. This school year, we will discover, create, and share them in our programs. For Teacher Nights this month, we will examine Jessie Henson: Everything Comes Next and contemporary works to consider how artists embellish images and ideas.
Each registrant will participate in a 30-minute gallery experience and then a 90-minute workshop. Select a group below to register for the program.
GROUP A– EMBELLISH & ELEVATE: EMBROIDERED SURFACES
Inspired by Jessie Henson’s sewn paper works, this workshop explores how embroidery and embellishment can transform ordinary materials into richly textured artworks. Using thread, teaching artist Therese Straseski will guide participants to build layered surfaces, experimenting with repetition, color, and shine to see how small marks accumulate into something bold and expressive. Discover how embellishment can shift a surface from simple to striking—creating a piece that catches both the eye and the light.
GROUP B – BEDAZZLED BOOKS
Have your students been asking for a bedazzled lesson? Got a book that deserves a little sparkle? In this glittery workshop led by teaching artist and high school teacher Christina Kloeckner, transform an ordinary book cover into a dazzling masterpiece using gems, shiny bits, and your own creative flair. Bring a favorite picture book, classroom read, or well-loved novel—or choose from our stash—and leave with a book that’s both a great read and a sparkling work of art.
GROUP C – HOLD YOUR HEART: WRITING FOR RELIEF & RENEWAL
Teaching asks you to hold a great deal—for your students, your colleagues, and your community—but rarely offers time to hold your own heart. Poet-in-Residence at Creighton University School of Medicine, Janna Lopez, leads this workshop that creates a gentle pause where educators can reflect, release stress, and reconnect with their inner clarity through simple guided writing. No writing experience is needed—just a willingness to slow down, breathe, and let the page help carry what you’ve been holding.
FREE program; online registration closes Mar 23 (or when it reaches capacity); walk-in registrations accepted as space allows.
