Teacher Nights

Thu Sep 18, 4:30PM–7:30PM

Teachers from all disciplines, who work in Nebraska and western Iowa PK-12 school districts, are welcome to participate in this free program. Join in to connect with other teaching professionals—and yourself—over artful experiences at The Joslyn.

SEPTEMBER PROGRAM

Storytelling takes many forms at The Joslyn, and artworks hold stories waiting to be told. This school year, we will discover, create, and share them in our programs. For Teacher Nights this month, we explore local perspectives.

Each registrant will participate in a 30-minute gallery experience in Made in the Plains and then a 90-minute workshop. Select a group below to register for the program.

GROUP A– SAND PAINTING

Sand painting has roots in ceremonial traditions, where designs were created as temporary works, and over time, they evolved into artworks made for tourists. In this workshop, Oglala Lakota beadwork artist Valery Killscrow Copeland guides you in creating your own sand painting on sandpaper. Learn how to incorporate a personal healing design that reflects your own story.

GROUP B – SOUNDS OF ART

What music does an artwork hold? Create “instruments” with everyday materials to experiment with in our twentieth-century galleries. Then, with master storyteller Rita Paskowitz as your conductor, bring these paintings to life and compose the story they inspire.

GROUP C – HEARTLAND HISTORY TALES

Exploring the past means thinking through its many complicated narratives. But what are the most effective ways to share these stories with students, especially when dealing with difficult topics? Join Dr. Kyle Chattleton in a close study of the Trans-Mississippi & International Exhibition and related media from the past and present, followed by group discussions about storytelling in the classroom involving complex subjects.

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS CLOSED.
