City in Print
Hawks Pavilion
Works on Paper Gallery H5
In the early twentieth century, as a new tradition of American printmaking began to take shape, images of the urban scene dominated the attention of artists and illustrators. Many turned to printmaking—a reproducible medium used in journalism and advertising—to capture the dynamic setting and dramatic events of modern city life. City in Print features works on paper by renowned artists of the early twentieth century. These remarkable prints are recent additions to The Joslyn’s collection from a substantial anonymous gift of nearly one hundred works of modern and contemporary art. Recognizing the city as a subject of fascination and fear, the artists on view present the urban landscape as at once an icon of industrial innovation, a setting of pronounced inequality, and a frenzied spectacle of modern life.
