Description

Jean-Léon Gérôme’s The Grief of the Pasha (c. 1882) is a dramatic and poignant scene inspired by a poem by Victor Hugo. Set within a richly adorned courtyard, the painting depicts a Turkish ruler mourning the death of his beloved tiger, whose lifeless body rests upon an ornate carpet surrounded by roses.
