Postcard featuring Model Boat with Figures, an Egyptian Middle Kingdom tomb object symbolizing the voyage to the afterlife. Printed on cardstock, 4.25" x 6".

Description

This Model Boat with Figures, dating to Egypt’s Middle Kingdom (2055–1650 BCE), offers a glimpse into ancient funerary practices and beliefs about the afterlife. Crafted in painted wood, the vessel carries three seated figures, including a helmsman and rowers, symbolizing the journey of the deceased across the waters to the next world. Such models were often placed in tombs to ensure safe passage and continued prosperity beyond death. With its lively form and preserved polychromy, the work conveys both artistic skill and spiritual significance, bridging everyday life and eternal ritual in ancient Egypt. Part of the Joslyn Art Museum’s collection, it was a gift of Mrs. A. F. Jonas in 1935.
