Painted in 1862, Robert S. Duncanson’s Falls of Minnehaha depicts the famous cascade in Minnesota with a blend of natural grandeur and lyrical romanticism. Duncanson, often celebrated as the foremost African American landscape painter of the nineteenth century, was deeply influenced by the Hudson River School’s emphasis on light and atmosphere.
