Elma Thaw (née Dows, 1861–1931), possibly by 1892 [1];
Purchased at her posthumous sale, American Art Association, Anderson Galleries, New York, February 8, 1935, through J. Laurie Wallace, by Charles W. Martin (1863–1944), Omaha, 1935–November 27, 1940;
His gift to his nephew, Francis T. B. Martin (1904–1995), Omaha, November 27, 1940;
Bequeathed by Martin to Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, Nebraska, 1995.
[1] A cataloguing summary compiled by Francis T. B. Martin identifies Elma Thaw as “Mrs. Benjamin Thaw (1859–1933) of Pittsburgh, Pa., whose husband was the administrator of the estate of his brother, William Thaw (1853–1892) of Pittsburgh,” suggesting the painting may have once belonged to William Thaw, Joslyn Art Museum object file.
