Art-Tastic Saturdays

Sat Aug 1, 11AM–2PM

Animals in Art

First Saturdays of the month are for art fun! Stop by for gallery activities, special presentations, and creative exploration designed for all ages. Our activities are inspired by all the animals that can be found in artworks throughout the Museum.

A look at the fun this month from 11 am–2 pm:

  • Begin at our Welcome Table in the Hawks Pavilion! Pick up a program and map for the day. We can let you know about membership opportunities, upcoming programs, our Bloomberg Connects digital guide, and Art Card self-guide resources. We also can help with any accessibility needs.
  • Out & About Storytime with Omaha Public Library, 11 am.
  • At 12 pm Nebraska Crossroads Music Festival musicians, Oscar Rios Pohirieth and Amado Espinoza, will perform; both are masters of the musical traditions and instruments of the Andean Mountain
  • At 1 pm, join Austen Hill of the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District (NRD) for a live animal presentation about Nebraska native animals and their habitats.
  • Visit our Garden Art Cart in the Discovery Garden for a drop-in activity called Plants, Memory, and Making. Mi’oux Stabler (Umoⁿhoⁿ), Prairiescape Designer, will invite visitors to explore how plants connect to culture, care, scent, and personal memory as they create a sweetgrass braid to take home.
  • Check out an animal-themed mural in the Discovery Garden, created by teen artists in the Kent Bellows Mentoring Program with mentor Hugo Zamorano, and add your own marks.
  • Create your own work of art with teaching artist Therese Straseski.
  • Slow down and sketch in the galleries.
  • Check out our Art Cart station, with opportunities to touch hands-on materials and talk about art with our friendly Gallery Volunteers.
  • The Founder’s Room is designated as a quiet space for this event.
  • Due to the generous support of Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program, Through the Lens: American Photographs from the Carter Collection, is free to all today; always free to Joslyn members.
  • Don’t forget to check out more great spaces—The Cafe offers food and drink for sale. The Shop has beautiful art items for all ages and interests. If you are part of an intergenerational group, be sure to visit Art Works: A Place for Curiosity, an interactive space with nine different art activity stations (children must be accompanied by adults).

Sponsorship for this program series provided by First National Bank of Omaha and Omaha Steaks

Generous support provided by Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All Program, the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, a gift in memory of Matthew W. Gress, and a gift in loving memory of Peggy Severson

Thanks to program partners Omaha Public Library, Nebraska Crossroads Music Festival, and Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District.
