Tea Party!

It’s clay time! Young artists will squish, roll, pinch, and shape clay as they make their very own cup and saucer. Along the way, they’ll explore how art can be both beautiful and useful. To celebrate, we’ll visit The Cafe and try out our finished creations with a special drink and small treat.

Lil Berets

Little artists will explore the colorful landscapes, figurative drawings, and poster designs in the exhibition Café Society. Through playful painting, drawing, and collage activities, we will try new art materials, mix and blend colors, and create our own mixed-media artworks while learning a little about French art and culture.

All About Perspective
Sat: Oct 10, 17, 31, Nov 7; 1–3 pm (no class Oct 24)
Learn how artists draw in perspective to give their artwork a sense of realistic space. Students will travel around The Joslyn to gain inspiration from the architecture and the artwork in the galleries. Back in the studio, we’ll learn to use simple geometry concepts to create the illusion of space, then add creative elements to our drawings using mixed media techniques.

Quite an Impression!
Sat: Nov 21, Dec 5, 12, 19; 10 am–noon (no class Nov 28)
Take a trip to nineteenth-century Paris and discover paintings by Renoir, Degas, and Van Gogh! Students will explore Impressionist techniques such as loose brushstrokes, layered color, visible mark-making, and the playful use of light and movement. Through color mixing and expressive painting activities, students will create impressionistic paintings inspired by people, objects, and landscapes.

Ages 9–12

Pressed, Printed, & Folded
Sat: Oct 10, 17, 31, Nov 7; 10 am–noon (no class Oct 24)
Paper can do so much more than sit flat on a desk! Young artists in this class will cut, tear, fold, sculpt, and print to see how paper can become sculptures, collages, books, and pop-up relief artworks. Students will transform simple sheets of paper into imaginative 2D and 3D creations while learning to incorporate the elements and principles of design.

Café Vessels
Sat: Nov 21, Dec 5, 12, 19; 1–3 pm (no class Nov 28)
Students in this class will learn to hand build and decorate essential cafe wares, such as a teacup, pastry plate, and a small cream pitcher, while learning how artwork can be both beautiful and functional. We’ll apply white terra sigillata and glazing pens to add playful patterns and details to our wares. The final class will be a café-style celebration where students can try out their finished artwork with drinks and small treats.

This visual arts program introduces students to The Joslyn’s collections and exhibitions with instruction in six media—drawing, painting, pottery, printmaking, sculpture, and fiber arts. Students explore each medium, while building art skills and concepts at age-appropriate levels. Joslyn Art School’s museum setting provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to encounter original works of art, experiment in related art media, and learn from a professional staff committed to providing individual challenges and guidance.
