Learn basic hand building skills as you create the essential items found on the cafe table—soup bowl, spoon, coffee cup, and a woven breadbasket. Trade your brush for a palette knife and create expressive, three-dimensional floral paintings in a modern impressionistic style. We’ll use high quality acrylic paint, heavy body mediums, and work on professional canvas while painting from observation, learning to simplify complex floral scenes and to use impasto textures rather than rigid details.

Palette Knife Florals

Examine the connection between art, the senses, and well-being in this class inspired by research in the neuroscience of art. Each week, begin in the galleries with slow looking and discussion centered on one work of art and supported by a short reading or podcast. Then move to the studio for guided experiments with watercolor, pastel, air-dried clay, found objects, sound, gentle light, and written reflection. Through mindful looking, listening, creating, and conversation, students will discover how engaging with art can encourage empathy, social connection, cross-cultural understanding, and a deeper sense of meaning.

Neurographic Art

Discover this unique art-making technique by beating recycled paper to a pulp and incorporating natural or found objects to make one-of-a-kind art papers. Use the colors and natural imagery of the Impressionists for inspiration as you learn to control your paper pulp to create landscapes and imagery by “painting” with paper.
