Oil Painting: Monet Landscape

Learn to paint like Claude Monet by exploring Impressionist oil techniques in this intensive workshop. We will study color theory, loose brushwork, and ways artists capture light. Create vibrant landscapes and water scenes using broken color and thick paint layers.

Ceramics: Botanical Inlay

Figure Drawing: Belle Époque

Neurographic Art

Examine the connection between art, the senses, and well-being in this class inspired by research in the neuroscience of art. Each week, begin in the galleries with slow looking and discussion centered on one work of art and supported by a short reading or podcast. Then move to the studio for guided experiments with watercolor, pastel, air-dried clay, found objects, sound, gentle light, and written reflection. Through mindful looking, listening, creating, and conversation, students will discover how engaging with art can encourage empathy, social connection, cross-cultural understanding, and a deeper sense of meaning.

Handmade Paper

Discover this unique art-making technique by beating recycled paper to a pulp and incorporating natural or found objects to make one-of-a-kind art papers. Use the colors and natural imagery of the Impressionists for inspiration as you learn to control your paper pulp to create landscapes and imagery by “painting” with paper.

Painting on a Whim!

Explore gesture drawing and alla prima painting techniques using graphite, ink, watercolor, gouache, and acrylic paint. Visits to the galleries will introduce artists who captured urban life and social settings, then we’ll head to The Cafe to sketch the people and scenery around us. Back in the studio, students will transform their immediate impressions into fully realized paintings and drawings.

Drawing: Rendering the Real

This class will build upon basic drawing skills and teach more advanced rendering techniques through in-depth studies of concepts like perspective, composition, and shading. Students will refine their understanding of value, form, and space through direct observation of still-life arrangements and detailed feedback in class critiques. Paintings in the European galleries will guide us as we learn to draw realistic objects and spaces using graphite and charcoal.
