Currier & Ives played a defining role in shaping nineteenth-century American visual culture, producing widely circulated images that reflected the values, aspirations, and contradictions of a rapidly changing nation. Founded in New York in 1834 by Nathaniel Currier and later joined by James Merritt Ives, the firm published millions of affordable lithographs depicting scenes of daily life, historical events, political moments, and the evolving urban and rural landscape of the United States.
Revisiting America: The Prints of Currier & Ives is accompanied by a beautifully illustrated catalogue featuring 100 of the finest prints produced by the firm and published by the Joslyn Art Museum. The catalogue includes a foreword by Joslyn Art Museum Executive Director & CEO Jack Becker, Ph.D., along with essays by contributing scholars that place these works within their broader social and historical contexts. Together, the images and texts invite readers to reconsider the cultural significance of Currier & Ives prints and their lasting influence on American visual culture.
